SjaynepicHe is currently a Senior Scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  He received a S.B. in Earth Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Sc.D. in Physical Oceanography from the Joint Program in Oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).  He was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Colorado at Boulder Physics Department and CIRESNational Center for Atmospheric ResearchClimate and Global Dynamics Division, Visiting Professor at the King Abdullah University of Science and TechnologyRed Research Center, and an Affiliate Scientist for the National Center for Atmospheric ResearchClimate and Global Dynamics Division.

His research interests include understanding and modeling the ocean’s dynamics and its role in the Earth’s climate.  Collecting and synthesizing the diverse set of global ocean observations to map and understand the ocean’s general circulation.  Studying the special role of western boundary currents in the general circulation and eddy-mean flow interactions within them.  Investigating air-sea interaction in tropical cyclones.  Improving physical parameterizations in ocean circulation models.

Steve has been the author or co-author of 46 refereed publications and 11 other publications, author or co-author of 56 conference abstracts, and a presenter at 49 national and international conferences and workshops.

He has received many accolades from various organizations including the Goulandris Foundation Award, Dean A. Horn Award for Bachelor’s thesis, Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation, National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, Zeldovich Medal, and the Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research.

Steve is a member of the American Meteorological Society, Committee on Space Research, and the American Geophysical Union.  He is also a panel member for the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship.  Steve has been a journal reviewer for numerous journals.  He was the associate editor for the Journal of Geophysical Research.
